Centenary of Skewen Park

June 2026 will mark the centenary of the opening of Skewen Park. Coedffranc Council will be mounting an event to celebrate this landmark in June 2026. As part of the celebration, the Society will be putting up a photographic display of the park through the last hundred years. However, we need your help with this. Do you have any photographs taken in the park? Any date, any activity, any event – if you will lend them to the Society they will be scanned and returned – contact Anne Morgans on 01792 813300, or email info@skewenhistoricalsociety.org.uk Your photographs will be a welcome addition not only to the photographic display, but to the Society’s archives as well.

If you do not live locally you can email your photographs using the address given above.

SOCIETY TRIP ON THE COPPER JACK 3RD JUNE 2024

Unveiling of Skewen Heritage Trail plaque Friday, 20th October 2023

The weather was not kind to us on Friday for the unveiling of the Heritage Plaque. The mounting of the plaque on the front of the Memorial Hall in Skewen Park was the culmination of work undertaken by Vice Chair Lynette Drake and Chairman Virginia Jones to locate and identify places of historical interest in Skewen and district. Graphic designer Callum Rothwell designed the map to locate the sites. Besides the plaque a pamphlet has been printed to show the information. All this was made possible by a grant from Tesco.

Society at the Ironworks Open Doors Event 16.9.2023

The Society accepted an invitation form the Volunteers at the Ironworks Neath Abbey to take part in this year’s Open Doors event. The weather was not kind which was a pity as it did affect attendance.

Visit to Margam Abbey, 15th June, 2023

The Society enjoyed an interesting visit to Margam Abbey learning about its history. The Stones Museum was opened for us and a display of clerics’ cloaks was also made available. We were treated to home made cakes and tea and coffee to round off the visit.
