December 2015 Christmas Tree Festival at St. John’s Church

As part of the celebrations marking 165  years of worship at St. John’s Church, a Victorian themed Christmas Tree Festival was held in December.  The Society took part in this event and here are some of the trees that were on display.

Visit to Lanerchaeron 6th July

Our visit to see Nash’s house at Llanerchaeron was not dampened by the poor weather. Although it was overcast most of the day, with a lot of drizzle on and off, it was still possible to get around and admire the interior of the house and its gardens – the walled garden was especially pretty.  As it is a National Trust property there was always the cafe with its tempting menu to lift the spirits when the drizzle did start.  The day was rounded off by a stop at Aberaeron with its quaint harbour and sea front.

With thanks to  Ken Jones for the photographs.

Flower Festival at St. John’s Church, Skewen

To celebrate 165 years of worship at the Skewen Parish Church, St. John’s held a Flower Festival  from Thursday 25th June to Saturday 27th June.  The theme of the displays was the Victorian age.

The Society had a display entitled “Victorian Skewen”.

There was a lot of ingenuity to be seen in the many arrangements.

WW1 Heritage Day, Monday, 1st September

Our WW1 Heritage Day proved to be a real success with over 200 visitors viewing the displays.  We were provided with new information and material for our researches in preparation for the book we are planning on Skewen and WW1, plus we had many people providing us with oral reminiscences.   A big thank you to all who made the day such a success and to all those who attended.

Visit to Caerleon Legionary Fortress, Monday, 4th August

We were very lucky that the rain held off for our visit to the Legionary Fortress at Caerleon.   The museum proved to hold a fund of artefacts and our guide Dai, was very informative.

There was an exhibition of wood carvings depicting scenes from World War One near the amphitheatre:-
